Construction and Working Principle of Benson Boiler

In this post, we will learn about the Construction and Working Principle of Benson Boiler. I also published a couple of articles about the industrial boiler and if you want you can find it here after reading this article.

Before we go farther let’s know about the person who invented this supercritical industrial type boiler. This boiler was invented by Mark Benson between 1926 to 1927.  But in 1924, Siemens acquired the right to use Benson’s patent. He was a Bohemian German engineer and best known as the inventor of a supercritical boiler. He was born in Sudetenland, Germany and his original name was Müller. Mark Benson changed his name after World War I.

What is Benson Boiler?

Benson Boiler is a water tube steam boiler. If we add more then we can say it is a supercritical, high pressure, drumless with forced water circulation system boiler.  Due to the reason of the supercritical boiler, it compressed the feed water by supercritical pressure and prevents bubble formation inside the water tube surface and it is a great advantage of this boiler.

Construction of Benson Boiler:

First of all, let’s know about the main part’s name for this supercritical boiler. By the way, what is a supercritical boiler? A supercritical steam generator is a type of boiler that can operate at supercritical pressure which frequently used in the power plant for generating electricity.

Come to the point. Benson Boiler consists of the furnace where fuel use to burned and generate heat.  An air pre-heater use before the furnace that pre-heat air and heated air increases the burning efficiency of fuel. It’s kind of opposite than a fuel-burning system in any engine. Then a high-pressure feedwater pump uses to sent feed water inside the boiler at high pressure. Radiant superheater heats feed water by the radiation from burnt fuel.  A convection evaporator convert’s superheated feed water into steam. An economizer is used to heat feed water in the first place. A convection superheater uses to generate steams at the desired temperature.

Working Principle of Benson Boiler:

Now the Working Principle of Benson Boiler. We already know that it is a water tube boiler.  It uses pressurized feed water which pressured by steam and in the furnace it uses fuel to generate heat. Benson Boiler does not contain any drum as Wilcox and Lamont Boiler has. Furnace installed at the bottom of the boiler. Furnaces oil burn inside the furnace and heat goes through the radiant tube, superheater, and economizer, then flue gas comes out by the chimney. Feedwater goes through an economizer by steam pressure.

After passing the economizer, feed water comes to the header which is present at the bottom of the radiant tube. Water absorbs heat from the bottom header and radiant tube then is reach to the top header. From the top header, the steam goes through the boiler transit section and comes to the superheater. Inside the superheater steam becomes more heated and then it sent to the turbine.

In Benson Boiler water at first, it goes through the economizer and then reached the bottom header and superheated steam supply form the other side. Benson Boiler can generate 136000 Kg steam with 210 Kg steam pressure per square centimeter.

By the Benson Water Tube Boiler feed water, strength converts into steam and for this reason by the feedwater pump, high-pressure feedwater sent to the boiler. Sometimes critical temperature level keeps below its maximum level for its better work efficiency during boiler installation time.

Advantage and Disadvantage of Benson Boiler:

Now come to some advantage and disadvantage of the Benson Boiler. The first advantage, it is lightweight and it has no drum. For this reason, it is lighter than other boilers. Its starting time is less than other boiler and it has up to 90 percent thermal efficiency. Due to supercritical types of boiler its controlling need to monitor every time for preventing an explosion and it is a disadvantage of this boiler.
