Aluminium Conductor Steel Rein-Forced (ACSR)

In my last post, I talked about the various types of electrical cable conductors. Now I will discuss (ACSR) Aluminium Conductor Steel Rein-Forced. So, let’s go.

Aluminium Conductor Steel Rein-Forced:

(ACSR) or Aluminium Conductor Steel Rein-Forced consist of a core of galvanized steel strand and its surrounded by a number of Aluminium strands. Normally the steel conductors are used for galvanized in order to prevent any kind of rusting and electrolytic corrosion.

The cross-section of the two metals (Aluminum & Galvanized Steel) is in the ratio of 1:6. But in case of high strength conductors, their ratio can be 1:4.

Now came to the steel core. The steel core mostly takes a greater percentage of mechanical stress while the Aluminium carries the maximum amount of current through the electric cable.

The ACSR conductors have high tensile strength but it lighter in weight and it produces a small amount of sag and therefore longer spans can be used in high transmission long overhead national grid line. ACSR conductor has the largest diameter than any other type of same resistance, so corona losses are reduced by using these conductors.

Some Disadvantages of Aluminium Conductor Steel Rein-Forced Conductors:

  1. ACSR conductor has gets deteriorated in-service time to the atmospheric corrosion due to bimetallic action zinc & Aluminium, electro-chemical in nature.
  2. The skin effect is very predominating for the ACSR conductor hence the resistance and reactance to the composite conductor are taken equal to that of the Aluminium covering alone.

In my next post, I will discuss different types of cable insulators or insulating materials like porcelain, glass, and steatite. So don’t forget to come back again. Thanks!
